NBA OR NFL?

36 have been accused of spousal abuse

7 have been arrested for fraud

19 have been accused of writing bad checks

117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses

3 have done time for assault

71, repeat 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit

14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

8 have been arrested for shoplifting

21 currently are defendants in lawsuits, and

84 have been arrested for drunk driving within the last year

Can you guess which organization this is?  NBA?  NFL?

It's neither. It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.

36 of 535 is nearly 7%.   I would bet that's lower than the general population, considering the high number of divorces with boilerplate restraining orders alleging abuse ("he hurt my feelings").

A lot of the rest of the stuff could go either way.  I gotta admit, I wouldn't qualify under any of those categories, but I'm half Vulcan.

Gotta get details, otherwise it could be too much like media hype.

Jeff Benedict sems to have made a cottage industry out of this topic.  See his works :

1.Athletes and Acquaintance Rape [1997];

2. Public Heroes, Private Felons: Athletes and Crimes Against Women [1997];

3. Pros And Cons [1998] [discusses NFL];

4. Out Of Bounds [2004] [discusses NBA].

I've read the 3rd and 4th titles.  Nothing to write home about but you won't be bored either.

And it reminds me why I've gradually lost interest in sports over the last 10 years or so.
