Trump's diplomatic mindset in dealing with foreign powers resulted in a short era of peace.  He cooled N Korea, there were no aggressive moves by Russia, he simultaneously retained cordial relations with China while upping tariffs.

What fundamentally brought down the Soviet Union is the inherent contradiction and failure of Communism. People simply won't work in a system that doesn't reward hard work and smarter work. Such a system is inefficient and can't compete with capitalism or even moderate socialism.
The other thing that brought down the Soviet Union is a consistent policy of Containment enunciated by George Kennan under Truman and followed by EVERY President since then though G.H.W. Bush to resist the expansion of Communism at every point.

I think you can't subtract Russian history from Putin's goals, as he pointed out. Ukraine itself was at one time the original Russia. Russia had a long and tumultuous history of being invaded, the last of which was the Hitler's.   There was the cruelty of Stalin, the targeted starvation of Ukraine and general starvation in the Soviet Union during the years of collectivization.   Putin, of course, was too young to be involved in Stalin's government, being born only a few months before Stalin died.  In his interview with Tucker he also criticized a lot of Soviet decisions.

So it is no doubt that given Russian history, they are wary of invasion.  There are also a lot of natural resources in eastern Ukraine, coal, natural gas, various minerals and farmland.

The west's push to move NATO ever eastward is clearly a major trigger for the eventual hostilities.  This war could have been prevented.
