Time and a half and double time is market inefficient. So Trump is correct.  It's better to hire a second shift than to force workers to go beyond 40 hours.

When I consult manufacturers on labor shifts I review how long the project will be, how many hours needed. Then I’d recommend doing a “second” shift. But if it’s a short term job, then I’d say do the overtime and avoid all the unemployment hassles and the learning curb needed.

I use power tools mostly, but I also do a lot of hand tool woodworking. I have a nice collection of Stanley planes, hand routers, bit braces, tenon saws, cabinet scrapers, etc. I know people who do woodworking for a hobby and I know people who do it for a living. Small shops to big shops to garage shops. There's a pretty universal rule when it comes to building anything custom for a customer. You take 100% payment up front.

Most businesses only schedule people for 38 hours just so they don’t go into over time. I knew a lot of guys who’d work 9 hours a day so they could go home early on Friday. Most businesses avoid this these days by putting people on salary.
