The 60 Minutes interview was taped in late October 2020 (Oct 22, I think). Up to that time, very little was known or verified publicly about the laptop stories.  The Trump campaign (including Steve Bannon), via Giuliani, had the hard drive contents and an assortment of info that they selected to be leaked, INCLUDING accusations that Joe Biden was in on Ukraine deals.

On October 14, 2020, just three weeks before the 2020 presidential election, the New York Post published a front-page story that presented emails from the laptop, alleging they showed corruption by Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee. According to the Post, the story was based on information provided to Rudy Giuliani (and then to the Post). AFTER the election, forensic analysis authenticated some of the emails from the laptop, including ***just one of the two emails*** used by the Post in their initial reporting. NOTHING WAS VERIFIED AT THE TIME OF THE 60 MINUTES INTERVIEW OR BEFORE THE ELECTION.

SEVERAL OTHER NEWS OUTLETS had either declined Giuliani's offer or agreed to accept the hard drive but then investigate and verify any information BEFORE publishing it. (In 2017, Russian hackers published a combination of real and fake emails attributed to Macron just two days before the election: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Macron_e-mail_leaks - read wiki for the source of the fake emails.) For that reason and other known Russian hacking and misinformation campaigns, news outlets wanted to VERIFY things PRIOR to publication. There were several recent and PROVEN Russian hacking incidents that led to statements along the lines of, "This has all the hallmarks of a Russian hacking campaign. Proceed with caution."

Giuliani wanted the emails published ASAP w/o any due diligence or verification and The NY Post had no problem with that.

During the 60 Minutes interview (Oct 22?, 8 days after the NY Post story came out), Trump complained that the "fake news" wasn't putting enough emphasis on Biden and the laptop stories. Leslie Stahl clearly says to Trump in the interview that it's because 'CBS has not yet been able to verify the stories.' (No one had been able to verify the stories at that time.) Etc., etc., etc. ... And Trump has a hissy fit and leaves in a huff.

Trump's Health Plan came up in the interview, too. After Trump storms off, Kayleigh McEnany brings in a big fat book, maybe 2200 pages thick, and gives it to Stahl and then McEnany leaves. Stahl riffs through a bunch of pages and they are all just blank sheets of paper!! THAT was Trump's Health Plan ... and it hasn't changed much since.

Forensic analysis of the computer and its contents was not completed or made public until AFTER the election and further investigations continued for months and months (years?) AFTER the election. Four years and two Congressional investigations turned up ZERO evidence that Joe Biden was involved in any Ukraine or China deals.

Trump and his MAGAs can whine and cry that the "fake news" didn't believe Trump when he complained about Crooked Joe and, now, he wants CBS to apologize for not publishing the laptop stories BEFORE anything had been verified.  That should be a two way street: CBS apologize for not publishing what turned out to be the truthful parts of the laptop stories if Trump will apologize to Joe Biden for making FALSE accusations about his involvement with Ukraine or China businesses.

Back to the Fact Check: Trump is lying again. Trump chickened out of a 60 Minutes interview because he is afraid of being fact-checked in real time. If 60 Minutes publishes an apology -- "We're sorry we didn't believe you in Oct 2020." -- Trump still wouldn't sit down for a 60 Minutes interview.
