But one of the main motivations wasn't "national security," it was to protect the wealth of American planters like the Dole family. The US also wanted to compete with other colonial powers by grabbing an empire from Spain and flexing its might on the world stage. And Hawaii was a convenient coaling stop on the way to The Philippines. But hardly necessary for "national security."
Anyway, neither Hawaii nor Alaska was seized from an ally by force.
