New: a look at the Dem divide over transgender rights and DEI programs

Rahm Emanuel tells @erinpdoherty and me: “Some kids in the classroom are debating which pronouns apply, and the rest of the class doesn't know what a pronoun is. That's a crisis."
The Human Rights Campaign told us: "Our message to Gov. Newsom and leaders across the country is simple: The path to 2028 isn't paved with the betrayal of vulnerable communities. It's built on the courage to stand up for what's right, and do the hard work to actually help the American people."

Dave Weigel points out it’s an issue Dems need to confront:
The issue isn’t just Newsom; it’s, can any ambitious 2028 Democrats answer the question without turning into a pretzel?
It starts with little things like pronouns:
We also asked Buttigieg why he removed his pronouns from his profile on X in recent months, per Internet Archive.

A spokesperson didn't respond.
And of course there’s “Latinx” instead of “Latino/Latina”.
One other line from Newsom’s podcast with Kirk:

"not one person ever in my office has ever used the word LatinX."

Seems to me that Newsom is trying to position himself as the moderate Democrat who can win the White House back in 2028.

Politico has not one, not two, but FIVE reporters covering the fallout of Gavin Newsom’s comments about men in women’s sports during my interview with him.

Lori Lightfoot says he’s “disgusting.” Sacramento is in an uproar. Democrats all over the country say that this issue is a litmus test for the party going forward.

Democrats simply cannot handle taking an L in the culture war.
