We wouldn't dare sail one thru the South China Sea in the event of war with China. They'd launch a salvo of 1000 missiles at it needing only one to hit. We couldn't stop them all.

CVN's are necessary and important in many areas like the PG, The Med. Westpac Japan, Korea and yes the South China Sea too. They travel with some pretty well armed body guards, and a few more (CVN's and body guards) would not hurt
They are useful for projecting power in areas not threatened by full scale assault by major powers with land and even advanced airborne missile systems. Aegis is dated but still advanced but can be overwhelmed. They're fat juicy targets in confined spaces against a power lol like China on their "turf." I don't care how many destroyers, frigates we have, which today is not nearly enough, china has a lot more cheap, accurate and deadly anti-ship missiles. In times of "peace" they're useful. In times of war, not nearly so. We need a lot more subs and smaller surface ships today than we do carriers. They're cheaper and more versatile and in the case of subs can choke off the South China Sea. CVN's today are the BB's of the 1930's when it comes to full fledged war. One DF-21 much less a DF-26 with a range of 2600 miles a CVN becomes a floating pyre. We couldn't stop them all. And we know it. I'm not sure even a master naval tactician like Trump would dare sail a carrier battle group right by say Frigate Shoals in times of peace much less time of war. Oh. And the F-35 is junk complicating carrier capabilities even further.

I am a military aircraft amateur photographer and know a pro that works with F-35 guys taking side by shots from a Bonanza. He has seen the F-35 do things a Viper could only dream of doing.

And to boot it has serious design and performance flaws. Granted, most new programs do but for $150M each don't you think they'd be few far between? I would think so.
