Regarding automatic weapons...
I'm sure you meant semi-automatic.
I'm sad to say, and I'm torn on this because I do believe in the right to bear arms, and I understand why it's important with regards to freedom...I also happen to believe that a sensible paradigm can be reached that doesn't compromise the 2nd ammendment all the while providing greater safety for our communities.
But I'm sad to say, I can guarantee you that if you remove semi-automatic weapons from the equation the mindset which contemplates such deeds will gravitate towards the typical pump action shotgun.
I know that personally I could easily wreak the same havoc as easily, if not even more effectively with a 12 guage pump. It is one of the more no-brainer choices if you need to destroy people at close range.
It's slippery slope. We have a huge social issue in this country and it's titanic in proportions. Overall we have a materialistic mindset, that's greedy, and underlying that is a "fuck you, I'm getting mine," mentality.
What's sad about this scenario is it illustrates how an irresponsible firearms owner can negligiently provide the catalyst for such horror.
That young man should never have been able to access those weapons.
Anyone care to speculate on the Region, State or City? Maybe even guess School Township for all you gun experts.
Even though we have unsuccessfully banned drugs for decades, it's "impossible" to even try to fail at banning guns. That would be just plain wrong.
So sit back and guess where the next tragedy will occur. Winner gets a US map and a set of darts.
with a handgun?
Only idiots look at one side of the equation.
DON'T GET TOUGH ON GUNS - GET TOUGHER ON THE CRIMINAL/MENTAL INSANE.
Guns don't kill people, other people do. And even if all guns were removed, murderers still can and often do kill with knives, pipes, axes, blunt instruments and even bare hands and feet. Removing the guns only removes one potential weapon murders can use; it also removes the one tool that allows a lone woman/man to have any chance of fending off a would be rapist / murderer in a dark parking garage alone. Get tough on the violent thugs and put them away for life; then fewer citizens will feel the need to carry a gun to protect themselves. And then there will be less crime AND fewer gun accidents. Get tough on the criminals and solve the problem.
And I know I'll get blasted on this one but it won't be the first time LOL.
But please just think about it, Hitler wanted gun control. All tyrants are afraid of having arms in the hands of the people. Which is why I will always defend a constitutionally given right to a gun. You don't like criminal use of guns? Punish criminals for their acts, not the tools they use. I can kill a congress critter with a hoe. Should garden tools be controlled?
Why does it take 20 years to execute someone in cases that are open and shut !?!?!
We say we have a death penalty in this country, but not really
why such heinous crimes you describe take place in the so called advanced society? There is something absolutely wrong.
These heinous acts seems to occurring more and more in our society than any otter country, why? This is fundamental questions we must answer instead of debating the merits of the constitution and if you want to debate the constitution, these crimes violates the constitution on so many levels.
This society has become one of entitlement, lack of consequences and lack of personal responsibility and accountability. Greed is also part of that equation.
I have lived in three countries, two of which do not have a constitution nor do they have the death penalty. However both of these countries do not have the rising issues this one does.
The constitution is old...and should be redefined to be inline with the 21 century. There are so many things alive and well today that effect society that were not even dreamed of back then. The internet for starters. Free speech at it's worst.
I find the anonymity of the internet, at times very disturbing. People say things to others that they would never say face to face. Why? Because face to face means a real life personal interaction and immediate consequences (a possible punch to the face). The internet requires no filter other than that which the moderator or owner of any site feels the need to impose. No consequences, no thought, no filter, but a lot of disrespect and anger.
Punishment is inadequate to say the least. When a persons money is more important than a human life I have to wonder.
I have no solutions only opinions.
When you mix greed, free hateful speech, a lack of personal responsibility and accountability and entitlement in one big heated pot, there is bound to be an explosion of mammoth proportion.

Well stated, I agree with you 100%
Which, I assume, was your point. But the sad reality is, the genie is long out of the bottle. We will never eradicate guns in private hands. That doesn't mean we should do nothing, starting with properly enforcing the laws we already have. But with the NRA's hand around the testicles of our law-makers, there's very little else that can be done. I'm in favor of private citizens having the right to keep a gun in their own home. I believe anyone should be able to have a hunting rifle or shotgun. That's it. Where does it say in the Constitution you have a right to carry a concealed weapon in public or have an automatic weapon of any kind?

Yes, semi automatics are legal, but it's far to easy to convert them to full automatics. You're right about the shotgun. In the end, while we do need some better laws (outlawing 100-round magazines, making people who buy at gun shows and on line go through the same process as at gun stores, etc.) the real problem is in getting proper treatment for the mentally ill and in getting parents to raise kids with decent values.
