It has been 100 years since the last time the Democrats nominated a sitting governor for VP. I believe the last seven have all been from the Senate (repeating a claim seen on the webz.)

They don't get picked as often in modern times as they did in the early years. It seems the Senate is a better path to both president and VP. Maybe because governors get more noticed in their own states whereas senators are more on the national stage.

This is from a distant memory, but I think governors or former governors have a better record at winning the presidency than senators or former senators.  Roosevelt, Carter, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush Jr were govs.  Obama was a senator.  So was Biden, but he was also VP.  Kennedy was a senator and so was Johnson, but Johnson was also VP.  Truman was a senator but he was also VP.
