I will most likely never see any of my FICA taxes (social security and medicare) back, since these programs are projected to go bankrupt well before my retirement.  Just what exactly do I get?  Do I get to pay for baby boomer's medicines ("I have a right to free Viagra 'cause I was at Woodstock!")?
It is easy for you to spend other people's money, TellingItLikeItIs, but don't spend mine.  I'd rather pay for my children's college and maybe save a little for retirement, since I know the government won't be there for me in 30 years.

Take a look around. Do you see roads, schools, police officers, etc, etc, etc.

You were kidding, right?

Carl is talking about Social Security and FICA taxes. Not income tax. And he's 110% right. So, it seems correct that you can't answer the question after all. ;)

Roads, schools, etc... are mostly paid for by local and state governments (except interstate construction and federal civil core of engineers projects, which don't happen that often).  But I was refering specifically to FICA taxes, which go from my pocketbook to the federal government and are immediately spent (they don't get saved from year to year or go to some account in my behalf).  And again, I firmly believe (and most experts agree) that Medicare and Social Security (which aren't bad programs, IMHO) will go bankrupt in the next 10-20 years.

Is it perhaps because the majority of the American public supports Social Security?  And Bush lacks the integrity to do the right thing if the majority would oppose him?

Social Security is in the situation it's in, because NOBODY has the courage to fix it.  Not Bush and the Republicans, and not the Democrats.  I don't see how you or Carl can tar Kerry with that brush, while failing to cover Bush with it as well.

control when it takes 60 votes to get anything to the senate floor for a vote (which seems like circumventing the constitutional 50 vote rule).  There have been many items on the agenda that are backtabled because of the 60 vote rule.
