Newman just spun in his grave with that idiotic logic - EOM

and we  did not  mentioned it here.  Better late than never.

Were we too busy with fears of impending pauperization?

Do we just enjoy waaaay too much fun mocking McCain, Obama, Palin, Pelosi et.al?

Were we too pissed off at his "knee-jerk" liberalism?

A great actor, a navy veteran,  a generous humanitarina, my oldest sister's first movie star crush,  Newman was nominated 10X for Best Actor.

And, little-known factoid, when artist Gil Kane developed the image of [the Siver Age] Green Lantern in 1959, Kane modeled the character after Paul Newman.

A great man in so many ways. Person, actor, philanthropist.....

The favorite story that I heard after he died was a someone wrote to the L.A. Times saying that he had been at one of the summer camps Newman set up for kids.  Newman was visiting and having lunch with the kids, and he asked one if he kid knew who Newman was.

When the kid didn't know, Newman pointed to a cartoon of "Newman's Own" lemonade that was on the table.  The kid looked at it and said, "Were you kidnapped?"

at heart. He believed in the Sancity of life. He used market based principles by leveraging his celebrity to perform good deeds. He was a capitalist. I always remember his wisdom on his secret of a long-lasting marriage.

He turned to the interviewer and said: "See that lamp". The interviewer replied: "So, it's old".

Paul Newman replied: "Well that lamp has been with us for thirty years. Sure it is a little outdated. It has needed a new cord, and light bulb but we still keep it. Sure we can buy a new lamp, but why replace the lamp when it serves us so well."

Too many people he says want to replace things, without knowing why, and wasting time and money doing so. When all it takes for the lamp or relationship to keep functioning and blossoming is a little maintenance or tender loving care.
That is conservatism.

While some of his political beliefs were not held by me, I never had the feeling that he was in my face with a superiority approach - as so many of the hollywood elite are.  he was totally grounded in common sense.

a good man - who many of hollywood owe so much to.  Unlike many of the very selfish and self centered folk there today.

In short, a great loss of a true national treasure.

For years, I have had a postcard of Paul Newman on my frig...besides making me cream my jeans, I loved who he was as a person.  He appeared thoughtful, grounded and above all, real.  He typifies what a "man" is and should be- at least in my eyes.  I always enjoyed seeing him talk during interviews- his soft, subtle and understated charm was mesmerizing.

By far, he is/was my favorite actor "crush".

I hope as I age, that I do it as gracefully and actively as he did.  He took life in his hands and wrung every last drop out of it, what a way to live!

I admired him for his acting, his philanthropy, his humanity and his humility.

He was one of the truly great and admirable men of his time.

But I didn't know that about Green Lantern. That's a cool factoid for sure.

Since 1982 they donated close to $250,000,000.  A quarter of a billion!

Great actor, great guy.
