Per usual, Can't-Do-Links provides no sources. In at least one interview, Newsom was talking about how long it took to RECORD (read out loud) the audio version of the book. Until CDL posts links to the relevant interviews, we won't know how to compare or contrast the two numbers or if Newsom was even talking about the same book.

Assuming a normal silent reading to oneself WPM of 200 and an Audiobook WPM of 150, the time ratio could be 150/200 = 0.75. If the audiobook is 4 hours of listening, reading to oneself should be 3 hours.  OR -- this is why we need links -- recording an audiobook may take more time than just reading the words. Set up. Sound checks. Etc. The monitor might ask for the re-reading of some passages or to correct an error. "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." Bzzzzz. Excuse me. Please redo that part. It should be jumpS, not jumpED. OK. Take two. And ... action! "The quick ..." One hour of finished audio might require three hours of studio time.

Years ago, Reading for the Blind enlisted volunteers to record books, in particular textbooks, technical, legal, or other specialized material (cf., popular, best-seller books). Computerized text-to-speech tech has eliminated the need for such volunteers. There were additional steps when recording an audiobook but I don't know the pre-computer numbers: four hours of volunteer time to generate one hour of the audiobook? That production ratio no longer applies since the computerized text-to-speech probably does ALL of annotating, indexing, etc.. automatically.
