The difference between debt between nations and the debt of individuals and corporations is that it is all but impossible to foreclose. Treasury debt is "full faith and credit" and nothing more. Obviously as the world's leading economy (for the time being at least) a default by the US would be so devasting to the world economy that it isn't really even worth considering.

Yes, our country IS broke. It is in debt up to its eyeballs, and borrowing that money from China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, etc. That is a fact of reality that cannot be denied. On debt, I somewhat disagree.

True, if I owe you so much money that, if I default -- you are ruined as well -- that gives me some leverage.

But it also gives you leverage. It binds our fates together and gives us, to some degree, a common interest.

But as this is a debt of the U.S. Government as a Corporate Entity; I am not certain that it is in the best interest of the American people that the government claiming jurisdiction over us has a sense of shared fate and common interest with ANY foreign entity.
