I'm not a fan of Reagan, but at least he didn't pretend to be the Red Baron

As a conservative I truly believe the soul of the conservative movement has been lost.  I was only 10 years old when his presidency ended and certainly would not have agreed with a few of his policies at the time.  However, I would have been proud to be a Republican under stewardship.
Its a sad day for me knowing that as a byproduct of his movement I have to watch everyday what has become of the Republican party.  A bunch of pirates, lunatics, and corrupt cronies have taken over the conservative movement in the guise of Republicans.
Bold without being arrogant, shrewd without being a cynnic, charismatic, convincing, inspiring, idealistic, positive, compassionate were all defining traits of his character.
On such a sad day I pray that the Republican party be cleansed of the corrupt lunatics that have taken over and also pray that the far left lunatics be cleansed from the party of another great and admirable leader by the name of John Kennedy!!
Our great nation is far too noble a human experiment and far too great a human achievement to be run by the likes of what we are seeing today.  As citizens of such a great nation I hope we can all summon that revolutionary spirit within and return to power great human beings and bold leaders while taking off the party blinders and truly cleansing the fringe lunatics in both parties who have made this such a bitter and divided country.

who gave their lives on D-Day to quite literally SAVE THE WORLD!

thank god THEY didn't spend their tour of duty shooting movies back home

Do some research before you post. Here's some info regarding Reagan's service, including the link to the site:

"Ronald Wilson Reagan enrolled in a series of home-study Army Extension Courses on 18 March 1935. After completing 14 of the courses, he enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve on 29 April 1937, as a Private assigned to Troop B, 332nd Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on 25 May 1937. On 18 June 1937 he accepted his Officer's Commission and was assigned to the 323nd Cavalry.

Lieutenant Reagan was ordered to active duty on 19 April 1942. Due to eyesight difficulties, he was classified for limited service only, which excluded him from serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation at Fort Mason, California, as liaison officer of the Port and Transportation Office. Upon the request of the Army Air Force, he applied for a transfer from the Cavalry to the Army Air Force on 15 May 1942; the transfer was approved on 9 June 1942. He was assigned to Army Air Force Public Relations and subsequently to the 1st Motion Picture Unit in Culver City, California. Reagan was promoted to First Lieutenant on 14 January 1943 and was sent to the Provisional Task Force Show Unit of "This Is The Army" at Burbank, California. Following this duty, he returned to the 1st Motion Picture Unit, and on 22 July 1943 was promoted to Captain."

But then again, with your having tried to trash the man, I wouldn't expect you to understand.

but what's the point  debating with your kind

that being assigned to a desk job due to a bad eyesight [cough] and ending up "in the rear with the camera gear" (making training films for the armed forces while never having set foot on a battlefield or experienced combat first hand) in addition to shooting TV commercials for War Bonds, *is* in fact serving "honorably" -- you know, kinda like the current president did fighting the NVA regulars right here on US soil

and meanwhile the poor dumb GIs whose bodies were cut in half by German machine gun fire on the beaches of Normandy were just as -- ie. *equally* --  brave

or something like that  ... but hey, who's arguing!

although I'm sure he would have done a much better acting job.

Ronald Reagan joined up in 1938, and volunteered for overseas duty repeatedly after the war began.  His requests were denied because of his poor eyesight.

I am certainly one Moderate who considers Reagan to have been a tremendously important and influential President, but certainly NOT a GREAT president. But, I will give him his due on several fronts:

1) He DID spend the Russians into bankruptcy by re-escalating the arms race to the point of the collapse of their regime. He deserves alot of the credit for that.

2) He did, be it through smoke and mirrors, PR, or the simple weaving of good fiction as believeable fact, manage to make most middle class working americans feel good about their nation again.

3) He DID get the nation out of the habit of believing that government was the solution to whatever problems we might have, and get us back into the realization that self-initiative is what makes this country great.

and 4) He was clearly a man of principles, even if I disagree with many of these principles, I cannot deny that he held them honestly and with full conviction.

On a less beneficial note, Reagan also gutted the social safety net for many of our most unfortunate citizens, turning tens of thousands of seriously mentally ill patients onto the streets, where they mostly ended up as homeless criminals.

And he certainly DID NOT solve the federal deficits that he pledged to during his campaign.

And most serious of all, it was under Reagan's watch that racism became acceptable behavior again in America, despite the fact that he almost certainly did not hold racist views, his tacit acceptance of the support of folks who were explicitly racist.

That being said, Reagan was mostly a very effective President in accomplishing his agenda, and he certainly makes Bush look meager in comparison (although that's probably just because Bush really IS meager, and not just in comparison).

But the problem with Reagan is that he has left us as a legacy, a significant population who believe that Reagan's ideas were what made him an effective President, rather than purely his Charisma as a man. And as such, we got stuck with his logical successor, Dumbya. A man who is not only bereft of creativity and compassion, but completely lacking in Reagan's principles and personal character, and shares ONLY many of Reagan's simplistic ideas.

Reagan is gone now. And hopefully, soon Dumbya will be gone, at least from office.
