I admit to my naivety; it's been a long time since I was pulled over

"just because"!

"Wage witholding" was once a temporary, emergency WWII revenue effort with a TWO YEAR moratorium. Seems the politicians forgot about that one also.

An acquaintance of  mine was charged  with a felony at a stop and check road block , for possessing one anti psychotic med  not matching his prescribed dose , his first brush with the law .
Too  many shrinks give out Seroquel , Zanax etc like candy , yet illegal possession of one pill can be a felony charge  .
He hopes  his  five  grand attorney might have the charges dismissed .
Personally I would go for a ten grand minimum attorney if facing a felony .

A neighbor was charged with driving while intoxicated at almost twice  the legal limit . My neighbor was behind the wheel and accelerator of a three thousand pound missile ,  while drunk, AT NIGHT  .  He was  charged  with a misdemeanor and slapped on the hand . His attorney only cost five  grand .

With so much  social and public media attention given to  drunk driving casualties in recent years , doesn't someone in this day and time have to be a total moron to  drive under the influence ?
Aren't they a clear and present danger to society ?

Why isn't  first offense driving while drunk ,  a felony ,  with mandatory jail time ?

Isn't it  time to have a prisoner exchange .

You can either possess a Drivers License, or you can possess a License to consume alcohol.

Was the medication givin to your acquaintance, by a doctor, with out a perscription, as in the form of a sample pack (tester)?

even those with their third DUI don't go to jail, or at least for only a tiny fraction of their sentence, because of overcrowding in the city and county jails.

If I ain't got hooch on my breath, and I ain't been driving/riding at over 100mph that fuck'n cop has no legal cause or right to rummage through my glove box or pockets on a fishing expedition.

They can search your vehicle on the grounds of “reasonable doubt”. Does not require a warrant.

Welcome to Patriot Act.

Why so you think the politicians keep terrorism in the center, to scare people to death so they can abuse your right to privacy. While we are bickering about stupid things and fail to face facts, politicians taking away our rights one by one.

Do you think the Patriot Act is going away when it expires?

Examples: Gunrights/Abortion, fiscal cliff, Gay marrige, God in schools, Benghazi, and so on.

In that case they can MSU (make shit up) and search everyone if they feel there is reasonable doubt of a freaking dead panda in the trunk...oh sorry no dead panda but we found a wrench that does not have your name on it...

Never heard of "Reasonable Doubt" as an excuse for a search.

"Reasonable Suspicion" can be a reason to detain someone.  But unless some other factor is present, it is not enough to justify a search.

Five grand attorney may get the charges dropped with plea bargain, but it is not going to be simple discharge.

Get the doctors to back up the medicine and get it in writing. It is a long hard road and without Dr backing up the med, attorney can’t do whole lot.

I friend of mine had gone through the crap last year, his charges got dismissed. Got fined $1,500 and on probation for two years. He trusted the lawyer little too much.

There is national organization fighting against this type of felony. In most cases, the meds are prescribed by Doctors and samples are given by doctors.

Which county is it?

Because unless she was doing something else they can't dig around in her purse or vehicle without probable cause. This isn't Nazi Germany, YET.
