Gary Gates -R opens up an 18 point lead against Eliz Markowitz -D in election night Texas House runoff.  Dems hoped to pick that seat up and poured money in from national, and three Dem presidential candidates got involved in trying to drag Eliz over the finish line.  Beto made it his top priority after dropping out of the prez race.   Beto had come within 3 points of winning that district in his race against  Cruz.  Kind of backsliding there.  So sad.  Too bad.

They survey people at these rallies and claim that typically 20% are democrats or independents.  Of course that kind of voluntary survey isn't always accurate.  But it does indicate that it is more than just the eager base showing up at the rallies.

I don't think I've ever spelled out bellwether before.  It was in the story I was referring to.  The dems wanted this to be a bellwether election.  Now pretty much I've only heard the term as spoken, and just assumed it was something like an alarm that signals a change in weather.
