I honstly mean this when I say that as much as I despise and loathe this empty suit and puppet known as Bush, had he the brains and true political courage to uproot the mullahs of Iran through covert ops or any other means after 9-11 I would have supported him wholeheartedly.  They are pursuing nukes and have admitted it, they are a extreme fanatical regime whose history for harboring and promoting terrorism is as clear as day, and they have publically stated their goal is to use the nukes as soon as they build one.  Not to mention that a huge majority of the Iranian public hates the mullahs and loves the US.  Yet Bush went after Saddam!!  Truly a jackass of mass proportion!!

The Proliferation Security Initiative is a 15 country alliance that in effect encircles North Korea, interdicting any ships leaving that Stalinist backwater that are suspected of trafficking in nuclear technology. Such an interdiction, which took place based on intel gathered within the PSI, played a major role in the disarmament of Libya.

A second alliance dubbed Caspian Shield, is in the works. It includes Kazakhistan and Azerbaijan, neighbors of Iran who together straddle the Caspian Sea. Look for Caspian Shield to grow over time, to include several more of Iran's neighbors.

It's becoming increasingly clear that the Administration is putting together a kind of nuclear "Anaconda Plan", a blockade  of states that are seeking nuclear weapons and (or) have links to terrorism. Iran and North Korea fit those criteria, as does Syria, as did Iraq. Libya fit that description until recently.

With Saddam out of power and Iraq's potential to become a stable ally, Iran is becoming isolated. I don't believe we'll invade Iran unless seriously provoked, but it's clear that there is a plan to try to isolate the mad mullahs. The link below goes to a Naval War College site with an interesting outline of the problems of rogue states and a plan for dealing with them.

The outline was written prior to the war with Iraq.

I don't have the depth of background to really evaluate the link, but there are clearly some very compelling ideas in it, especially the concept of participation in globalization as being a core determinant of behavior.  In spite of all my misgivings of globalization of our WalWart culture, it is also a fact and process that has great potential - that this article points out very well.

I will be interested in seeing logic that argues against this point of view.
