First, some basics you may or may not be aware of. The Hebrew calendar is a lunar calendar. Thus it differs slightly from our Solar based calendar. We know the assassination of Ferdinand was the catalyst to WW1, and that Austria declared war on july 28. But it was the act of Germany, an ally of Austria-Hungary, declaring war on Russia, with France, Russia's ally declaring war on Germany, that turned the regional war into a World War. The date was August 1, 1914. The Hebrew date: Tisha B'Av.
Adolf Hitler took power on July 21, 1934. His "election" as Chancellor less than a month later signaled the beginning of Nazi rule. The Hebrew date: Tisha B'Av.
Japan invaded China on July 17, 1937, thus widening the theatre of regional conflicts into a global arena and setting the stage for World War II. The Hebrew date: Tisha B'Av.
This year, August 3, 2006, is Tisha B'Av.
