The overall death rate in the USA is actually down, even including CV19 deaths, due to reduced travel, other flu spread reduction, etc.

But it's only 1 day so I am not going read too much into it, but obviously it's better falling than rising.

The lockdowns should start showing an effect in the decrease of new case rate.  Deaths will probably generally increase and lag behind new case declines by a week or two.

What every epidemiologist and public health advisor knew and tried to convey to Trump was the importance of EARLY interventions to stop the spread of infection because of its EXPONENTIAL GROWTH.  Each day delay leads to far worse outcomes down the road that could have been prevented by EARLIER INTERVENTION.

I don't know the current growth parameters for CV in different locales, but let's just look at the simple exponential 2^x ("two to the x"):  
Day 1 .................... Day 7............................................... Day 14 ... Day 21

If the first case you were warned was bound to happen shows up on Day 1 and DO NOTHING, you have two weeks before it will expand to 16,384 cases. If you take actions to prevent the spread, you can slow it down and you will have far fewer than 16,000 infections on Day 14.

If you think the numbers are remaining low by taking NO ACTION, e.g., a measly 64 cases on Day 7, and continue to DO NOTHING, you can expect a huge explosion in cases after 2 more weeks.  I.e., those 64 cases explode to more than 2 million cases.  So, if you finally decide to take actions on Day 7, you can slow down and avoid seeing 2 million cases on Day 21, but you will have many more than if you started on Day 1 or Day 2.

Waiting until Day 7 with 64 cases doesn't mean you only have an extra 64 cases on Day 21; you have an extra 64^y cases!

It only works if people follow the lockdown. Idiots are still out and about and having parties. One guy in Maryland had 60 people twice in one week at his house and finally got arrested. Go to Central Park on a nice day and you'll see people not keeping their social distances.
