It may be a good idea, but may not be economically practical, but I would like to know more about it.

If it takes $5 to make a gallon of gas, then it will go nowhere fast, or until someone is able to perfect the process to make it worthwhile.

I am not going to rob priapus53 of his daily collections of plastic bottles that he has been taking from other peoples recycle cans just yet.

How much energy does it take to produce a gallon of oil?

I have to think if this was practical, with so much plastic out in recycling centers someone would be doing this commercially.

With gas over $3 now, I can see a time when $5 would be feasible.  But if it takes the energy equivalent of 1.5 gal. to make 1 gal. of oil, I don't think it would be very practical.

1.5 gallons of petroleum products to make 1 gallon of ethanol. Ethanol then produces only 80% of the energy coefficient of 1 gallon of gasoline. Yet most states mandate that each gallon of gas contain at least 10% ethanol by volume, even though ethanol is less fuel efficient. The federal subsidies to corn growers are so large that their lobby will NEVER let the production of ethanol be stopped. Does that make sense....nah.

Price of breakfast cereal went up when the corn growers started selling their crops to make ethanol instead of Wheaties, as did every product that relies on corn as an ingredient. Is that practical? Again....nah.

That waste would be a problem to dispose of. That waste would be in the form of heat , gas and solids. I am guessing that the gas would be a bit toxic.
