While Maher's choice of words may have once again been less than thoughtful, his meaning is very clear.
The vast majority of the current crops of recruits are NOT coming from the well-heeled private schools of Beverly Hills California, or SouthHampton, LI, NY. They are coming from the ghettos of South Central and Harlem, and the forgotten formerly blue collar bastion of Detroit, Michigan.
And when they DO get a bona fide blue chip poster boy like former NFL player Pat Tillman, they kill him with friendly fire.

It's important to point out what ill-thought, reckless, Republican military ventures are doing to our military. Lynndie England was convicted-- apparently, low-lying fruit. She dishonored her uniform.
I'll admit "Michael Jackson fan club" and the Army shouldn't be in the same sentence, it doesn't look honorable, but ignore the initial rise in your blood pressure: what is he comparing here? The Army recruiting numbers to one of the least popular memberships in the US. But you know this already, try to keep adrenaline from blocking that message.
His quip was in bad taste, but that isn't treason. He had the tough job of trying to spin comedy out of something that's inherently unfunny.
His point is recruitment numbers are as bad as they could be. Unpatriotic? Anti-military? No! It's important to point this out, because without a draft, the troops stationed in Iraq will likely never be coming home, at least not in one piece, or vertically enabled.
(For those conservatives who cry treason at me, that last term was a euphemism, not a joke. At least I didn't say "assumed room temperature.")
If anything, Maher didn't go far enough: supporting the troops would have been to point this out.
