Here's a theory: I think that more guns begets more guns. Decreased gun availability begets fewer guns. Crime -- armed or unarmed -- is constant (per capita). Just a theory.

Is exactly right. Criminals fear armed victims.
Now your theory, that if I’m reading this right? Take away the guns and there will be fewer gun crimes? First off doing that in a meaningful way would be nigh on impossible.
It’s kinda like the Israeli Hamas situation if Hamas put down their guns tomorrow there would be peace if Israel put down their guns tomorrow there would be no more Israel. Kinda the same problem here, it would simply embolden the criminal element.
Take England for example they have removed guns and their crime rate, especially violent crime has risen and where knives are used it has skyrocketed!
