If you have seen any of the videos, it's pretty clear from the amount of blood running out of his neck that this was not survivable.  Two suspects in custody, the actual shooter and another guy who police think was involved because he has been spotted at other Charlie Kirk events.

"I thought" is almost the same as a guess and just as factual.  If you are going to shoot an animal, the intention is to drop it where it stood.  Body shots destroy meat, lung/heart shots (the vitals) will kill may allow an animal to suffer as well as run for a distance.  I've seen elk run for a couple hundred yards with destroyed lungs and animals that have been "body shot" live for several hours or days.  It's actually what you DON'T want to do unless you enjoy watching a creature suffer, hide in cover or run down into a ravine so you can spend a whole day getting your ass kicked by the terrain.

It was supposed to be head shot, but a kill shot has to be planned in 3-D, not 2-D.  Besides Left and Right, and Up and Down, you have to figure how much height you will lose with distance, velocity, air resistance and gravity.  His aim was probably dead-on, but he lost about 5 or 6 inches on the way to the target 200 yards away.  In the Trump attempt in Butler, the distance was much less, so the miss was caused by Trump abruptly turning his head. which made the miss to the left, not below the intended target.

Again, a head shot leaves the range of error to be about 20" below target which is a lot, but 6" to high and you mess up the hair, at best.  Removing the rise/fall on target greatly increases the odds for success.  It's much easier to maintain left/right vs up/down for a vertical target.  It has a lot to do with breathing, heartbeat in a prone position and potential muzzle rise that many shooters cannot overcome.
