I'm so ashamed of our government as a whole. To Hell with partisan perspectives. As good as it is in this country, our leadership as a whole have failed us.
Forget about whether its Hillary, or Obama, or McCain, Gingrich, Jeb Bush or Ray-Fucking-Nagin in the White House in 2009, the legacy this adminstration leaves to their replacements is one of shameful contempt of and by the majority of the world.
There are too many today who are caught up in the fervor of an isolationist "we don't need anyone we can do it on our own" jingoism that is , in my honest and humble opinion, extremely detrimental to the well-being of this country.
From the rancor towards Mexican immigrants displayed by such groups as the "MinuteMen"... a cynical conscription of a great and honorable history, to the odious behavior of the government in fanning the flames of race hatred  by funding new American built "detention facilities".... please... do not insult my intelligence... we're talkin' concentration camps.

The Legacy of the Bush Administration will eventually be viewed as a pivotal point in the evolution of America. Just as Pearl Harbor galvanized America, and the Kennedy assassination traumatized America. Somehow, the image of Nero fiddling juxtaposed with Bush playing guitar while New Orleans drowned seems timeless.

Those who fail to learn from history, are condemed to repeat history. Sadly, we have forgotten where we came from originally, and in the not too distant future, we will once again lose our identities in a downward spiral into a period of Chaos and a new Dark Age, and we once again forget our history and where we came from.

And then one day, a few thousand years from now, they will tell the tale of the Emperor Cretin who squandered the greatness of a nation.

I am a little less radical thinking, but do see this administrations lack of diplomacy disheartening.

As well, my disappointment often lies in the people of this country. Just turning a blind eye to injustice, lying and criminals in power.

I know this too will pass, and I hope it happens in my life time. In the meantime, I am focused on my community and working to improve life, and broaden the minds of my neighbors. Perhaps my work here will spread. :-)

and the name-calling race baiting politics as exemplified by those in leadership and our moderator. When the moderator of the P & R board refers to women with the c-word and other hateful words, this will only intensify the debate with anger, perhaps violence and resolve absolutely nothing.

The rancor will not resolve the problems with our budget deficit, the Iraqi war, Social Security, lack of an energy policy etc., or medical care at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital.

As President Ford use to say; " we can disagree but we don't have to be disagreeable".

And the way to go for it----  is to vote--Republican. Fight poverty, fight racism, fight ignorance, fight class warfare---- and fight atheism too.  Vote for freedom, vote for opportunity, vote for prosperity---vote Republican.   Remember, the only way we're gonna get our hobby legalized and whacky tabaccy for medical use legalized is vis a vis the Republicans.

"Remember, the only way we're gonna get our hobby legalized and whacky tabaccy for medical use legalized is vis a vis the Republicans"..

You are kidding right?...The Republican party doesn't have Barry Goldwater types anymore, it's all Sam Brownback, John McCain, Duncan Hunter, etc. & other far-right social conservatives who want to shove religion & THEIR values down everyone's throats.....The Republicans need more fiscal conservatives & social liberterians..

The only way we'd ever get the hobby legalized is if a social liberterian were in power, & unfortunately, I don't see that happening...

And, BTW, there is nothing wrong w/atheism...Less religion would be a better thing...

The world would be a nicer place if people realized that paradise can only  be realized in this lifetime and not be deffered to some distant future/place.

are actually pseudo-conservatives.  The mainstay of the Republican party has been based on these basic principles:

1) Fiscal conservatism and restrained government. This administration has been a polar opposite to this principle. Hence the huge budget deficit.

2) Environmental Responsibility. Ever since Teddy Roosevelt, we have preserved lands, for at the very least, we have place to hunt and fish.

3) Military presence. GWB and Rumsfield have been the worst CIC and Secretary of Defense combination since LBJ and Robert "asshole" McNamara. I miss Reagan and Weinberger, dammit. Nixon and Melvin Laird were excellent.

4) Stay the hell of out of people's lives. The Terry Schiavo case is perhaps the most irresponsible intrusion into people's lives since...heck I don't know when.

5) Stay out of foreign entanglements. Eisenhower got out of us Korea and Nixon out of Vietnam.

Doc, thanks for your passionate declaration.

It contains a great many truths. Truths that undoubtedly are difficult for some to confront, much less reconcile.

Elements of jingoism are too often mistaken for patriotism. Which, given the disparity between the two ideologies, makes for a troubling social climate.

I feel this nation has lost its way in the face of the ruthless aggression we suffered some six years ago. It's understandable to overreact immediately following such heinous affronts. But, it seems to me that a true sign of a nation's mettle is its ability to respond to such hostility with measured and responsible policies. Actions which are viewed as rash or unabashedly unilateral by the global community are neither realistic nor sustainable in any applicable context.

Railing against any and all enemies -- real, or perceived -- does not, in my opinion, constitute patriotism. Supporting a policy of isolationism, torture, discrimination and hatred does little for this country's standing within the geo-political landscape.

Like Vanica, I do the little I can to preserve my nation's integrity and principles. So in my own modest attempt at patriotism, I vote with my conscience and I pay all my taxes.
