Mich GOP county chair calls McCain move "complete crock of crap"
"If you are going to end visits to the state by McCain/ Palin, do it," urged Jack Waldvogel, Chairman of the Emmet County GOP in a message obtained by Politico. "Just don't formally announce that you are 'pulling out' of Michigan, and then come back two days later asking the base core of support to 'keep working.' What a slap in the face to all the thousands of people who have been energized by the addition of Sarah Palin to the ticket. I've been involved in County Party politics and organization for 40 years, and this is the biggest dumbass stunt I have ever seen."
Al Ribeiro, until now McCain's Michigan state director, had the unenviable task of sending out an email to Republicans in the state explaining as delicately as possible why they were pulling out.
"With 30 days before the election, the campaign must decide where it can best utilize its limited resources with the goal of winning nationally and ensuring John McCain is our next President,' Ribiero explained in an message Saturday, adding that McCain hadn't given up on the state and urging activists to keep working.
One county chair wasn't buying -- and he let Ribiero and a large list of other Michigan Republicans know in a scalding email reply.
Waldvogel added later in the message: "He has given up on our State? What a total and complete crock of crap. Again, I think McCain owes the Republicans and the People of Michigan a HUGE APOLOGY. SOON!"
Having to pick and choose which states to compete in is always difficult and bound to leave bruised local feelings, but Michigan is used to being a target state and McCain had lavished attention there since wrapping up the nomination. And Palin's public second-guessing of the move in the days since the decision was made has only angered Michiganders more.
"How on earth are we to get people to work for McCain here, when he has already, publicly, in the media, given up on Michigan?" wondered Waldvogel. "We feel abandoned, we are disappointed, and we are heartsick to know that we aren't important enough for him to fight for."
He signed off his message: "Yours in Republican? efforts"
This is just stupid sour grapes coming from someone who is evidently a political novice. This is how campaigns are run, especially when the campaign gets down to crunch time. This is the point at which both candidates cut their losses in states they are not likely to win, and focus on the states they need to win.
The only reason there was any sort of "formal announcement" is because with a 24/7 press cycle, it is "news" when a candidate so much as sneezes anymore. Every single move a candidate makes now is scrutinized and analyzed and punditizes ad nauseum, including the fact that McCain is channeling his resources to states where he has a shot at winning, and those states he HAS to win in order to get to 270.
Whoever Jack Waldvogel is, it is clear why he will never rise in national politics. The reason he's pissed isn't because he doesn't know what to tell his campaign workers - DUH who also have plenty of congressmen to work for as well - he's pissed because the local GOP won't be getting a cut of any more ad buys. This is a sophomoric complaint from some stupid shitkicker who has clearly risen at least two notches above his level of competence. But thanks for your vote on election day buddy. We appreciate that much at least.
You're overestimating the absence of frenzied decision-making within the McCain campaign. It hasn't been run well, and it hasn't adapted to the current climate of the voting public. Its advisers and aides have made a series of statements that allowed the Obama people and the media to expose it as out-of-touch with voters. From stating that this election "isn't about issues" to the "we need to steer the discussion away from the economy." Whether you believe these were taken out of context or not, an effectively run campaign would not have made such critical mistakes at such critical points in this run for the white house. The formal announcement to pull out of Michigan is just the latest poor decision of JM and his campaign. If anything, fear of scrutiny would have dictated that such an announcement NOT be made.
What had me laughing was Palin saying in an interview that she found out about the Michigan decision on the day of her debate because the McCain campaign sent her an e-mail informing her.
If that doesn't answer her question about what she would be doing as vice-president, I don't know what would. Her running mate didn't even bother to discuss the issue with her.
"The men folk are talking business in here, honey. Run off to the kitchen and bake some cookies or something. Wear that little outfit we like."
