to get both McConnell and Feinstein out of the Senate and let the respective governors appoint a successor from the same party. Since Newsom is a Dem and Lee is a Republican, it should all work out. What they don't want is a special election because then both seats might end up with the same party and that would change the balance in the Senate.

The governor of Kentucky is a Democrat. The state legislature of Kentucky is so overwhelmingly Republican that it is veto-proof. TWO YEARS AGO, the Kentucky legislature had the foresight to worry about Mitch's health. They didn't want the Dem governor to appoint a Dem to replace Mitch so they passed a law requiring that a retiring senator be replaced by someone from the same party.
The KY governor vetoed he bill but his veto was overridden by the Kentucky legislature. As it stands now, the Dem KY governor would have to appoint a Republican to replace Mitch.
