Dem governor, Newsom,  will be able to appoint someone to fill the unexpired term.  Even though it will be a party-line Democrat, at least they will understand what they are voting on.  Our last Lib Senator, Boxer, had the good sense to get out while she was on top and had some seniority. Feinstein has the seniority, but not the mental acuity required to head a committee.  

I have previously posted that Newsom could appoint Oprah Winfrey as a temporary place holder to avoid showing favoritism among the Lee - Porter - Schiff aspirants. (Does Oprah have CA residency? Some other eligible "name" or qualified popular Oprah-like celebrity who will not run in the next election.)

I also proposed (and rejected) that Newsom could appoint Kamala back to the Senate. (Others pointed out that Kamala would reject the offer as a demotion.) That would let Biden pick a new VP that would be better for the ticket ... except that a new VP requires approval of the House and McCarthy would block every selection keeping himself in the #2 position of succession.

Blacks and women would hate it and might stay home on Election Day. The only ones who'd like it are people who won't vote for Biden anyway.

Agnew was fined $10,000 and placed on three years' unsupervised probation. Only THEN did he resign. Nixon picked Ford as a replacement and Ford was approved by Congress. In 2023, the Dem majority in the Senate would likely approve any reasonable VP pick. The "MAGA Squad" within the Freedom Caucus controls McCarthy who would surely block ANY VP nominee thus keeping McCarthy directly in line to become POTUS if Kamala vacates the VP position.

to get both McConnell and Feinstein out of the Senate and let the respective governors appoint a successor from the same party.  Since Newsom is a Dem and Lee is a Republican, it should all work out.  What they don't want is a special election because then both seats might end up with the same party and that would change the balance in the Senate.
