Have you considered running for office? Or a least becomong a speechwriter. As dumbed down as Americans have become, Obama could read your scrpt verbatim and receive a standing ovation from the masses.

First - we were there as advisors even before the French (in perhaps one of the very few intelligent things the Fr. Govenment has ever in the history of that country done...) pulled out!By 1954 we were shouldering 80% of the cost of the war and when the French did pullout in 1954 well.... Eisenhower blundered in his failure to recognize a civil war when he saw one...

and that is the dude that initiated us into the Vietnam Quagmire.. unless you count Truman in  1950 - so do ya?

Lets face it, there is no political party in the US that is innocent of blood from the Vietnam war.... none.  So lets all get over ourselves - shall we?

but it goes back even farther - the Chicoms and Vietnamese commies were actually encouraged by us during the war because (a) they were the most effective anti-japs, and (b) we didn't like colonialism generally (because we weren't getting a big enough piece of it).

Then when the war ended, we shifted our POV because we were more worried about the Russian influence in Europe, and the Asian commies scared us.

So Ike did help the French, but drew the line at air support for DienBienPhu.  You gotta know when to cut your losses without involving your testicles, or others testicles.

Then things got worse in the south, and Kennedy got deeper into it, but of course it was LBJ who told us we could have guns AND butter, and committed ground troops.

A popular view among troops was that we were fighting the wrong dinks - the ARVN were venal, the NVA could fight.

Nixon wanted to save face, so he doubled our casualties.  "His face, our ass" was the troops' comment.  Again, he simply failed to understand the limits of military force.  You can kill a man with a weapon, but you can't change his mind.

The amazing thing is how impervious the Jesus faithful are to factual observation.  Bush has led us right down Nixon's path.  It would be very easy to ask, "exactly where are we going with this, and what are we going to do with this when we reach Baghdad?"

But nobody ever asked that question, or if the plan (WAS there a plan?) passed the laugh test.

Now you gotta be high if you don't think wars are also economic problems.   But Bush and the RNC are nothing if not high.

Who's to blame?  Well, we have some people who run the corporate and political interests who should know better.  Cheney is a prime example.   I really can't blame the redneck who thinks that his 6x6 shows how manly he is, because this poor fucker gets his news from Pat Robertson - but Cheney should see that this is going to take us ALL right down the toilet.

So what is the difference between US televangelists and Iranian ayatollahs?  The televangelists have a bigger budget, and don't have to use as many bombs.

"'exactly where are we going with this, and what are we going to do with this when we reach Baghdad?' But nobody ever asked that question, or if the plan (WAS there a plan?) passed the laugh test"

I would challenge that Bush 41 asked that question in the conclusion of GW1.. and came up with the answer that if Saddam were taken out, who would control the region... and he did not like the answer (Iran of course).  Where Bush 43 failed was in not asking his Pappy why he failed to take Saddam out - after all - the troops were there and there was NOTHING between them and Bagdad.... Schwartzkoff was ready to roll... but at least Bush 41 thought it through... unlike his knucklehead for a son...

the one person who did seem to ask 'exactly where are we going with this, and what are we going to do with this when we reach Baghdad?' was THE person in the Admin who had actual command experience in Iraq.... you know.. Colin P.  BUT was he listened to?  no - and guess what when he realized he had been duped... the guy quit.  quite frankly that is why I would have supported a run for the Presidency had he chosen to run... but alas.. he did not.

making precisely the same point during GW1.  This guy was on board during both operations.

When asked about it, his excuse is that "9/11 changed everything".

What, did 9/11 destroy somebody's ability to do the math?

just one good example of the reasons I think that the GW2 was not just stupid, but malicious.

on the other hand, large groups and committees are perfectly capable of insane behavior, as we see since the days of the Dutch tulip craze.

It's not my most pressing concern, but Bush43's mind is interesting (in the same way that a 3-some of praying mantises would be) - here is a fellow who cannot speak coherently, and yet clearly has some skills - those skills still do not seem to involve being able to understand what he is getting his ass (or our collective ass) into.

There is a popular idea that there are different sorts of intelligence, and I think that applies here - for most practical purposes, Shrub is a fucking idiot - but he has clearly been able to parlay his idiocy into leadership of the western world.

It seems to me that the Republicans generally understand that the money of Wall Street, partnered with the disciplined idiocy of the religious right, is an unbeatable combination, until they figure out that shitting where you eat is not a good long term plan.

With Obama as president...

* Millions of Americans will hope they will keep their jobs.

* Millions of Americans will hope they can pay the grinding taxes necessary to support his governmental give aways.

* Millions of Americans will hope that our grandchildren and great grandchildren will be able to pay off the staggering deficits that Obama's programs will incur.

* Millions of Americans will hope that Al Quaeda will not be so delighted with their victory in Iraq, that they choose to celebrate by knocking down more of our buildings.

Yes, we will be a very hopeful nation indeed.

Sins,

Thank whomever, a provider has chimed in!  With exception of Crystal Ball Operator, this discussion has been among (probably) old white men, the last bastion of Republican Elitist thinking.  My guess is that the providers, if interested, are looking towards Barack & Hillary for some way to get the country out of its economic and war-related disasters.

Let's hear more from the working girls, the ones who take a lot of nonsense just to please us old farts!

I am neither old nor white, but that doesn't mean that I don't recognize socialism when I see it. Either Clinton or Obama would be a disaster for this country.

BTW FYI CrystalBallOperator is actually JackO, another one of those old white men that you refer to. Everyone else around here already knows that, I think you need to get a clue.

he will fire the most people in DC, and I think that is the best we can hope for.   Yeah, I'll hope for that.

And I am indeed an income property-owning white man, and my kids think I'm old.  I will admit to gray hair, and that it hurts to get up some mornings, and I do need to lose a couple lbs.  In fact, I am a registered Republican, though mostly as homage to Eisenhower.  That, and conscious decision to vote in the local majority primaries.

But I ain't old, nor ever going to get old.  I can pin my high schooler in 15 seconds flat (and deck him faster if I had to), and connect with a 70 mph ball more often than not.
