opening the box. What you are doing is opening the properties and going to the URL address of the photo.
The issue for me has always been the WHY of that little box with the red 'x' appearing. It seems that not all pictures are transferrable. Some picture sites do NOT permit the 'copying and pasting' of photos without authorization. Hence, when any one tries to copy and paste those pictures to a new site (like the TER board), it is blocked from being posted. That's why the box with the red 'x' appears. Altenatively, some sites permit the temporary posting and build in a 'self terminating' link which, as the name implies, ends the posted link within a preset period of time.
As glpol says..you can always go to the picture's URL address OR, when posting photos from a site that doesn't permit 'copying and pasting', you can use a web hosting site:
Sites like PHOTOBUCKET, IMAGESHACK, or IMGPLACE, just to name a few, do the job. They don't all permit naked picture hosting though.
Sorry for the lengthy post but I have spent a lot of time dealing with this issue and wanted to share what I found out!
Some of you may know me from the NY TER board...where I post a "weekend donut gallery' on a regular basis. That's how I came to know so much about picture posting.
Regards!!!!

You know it must be an interesting image, but all you see is a little box with a red star, and you double click on it and nothing happens.

Just right click on X. Then click properties. Copy the web address (URL), paste it into your browser and hit go.

Voila, the image!

Is that worth a free session with anybody?

(hee hee)

Wow! you're the bomb, babe....getting to be a computer expert now among other things...wink
Are you back in town?

I saw the instructions elsewhere, so thought I'd pass them on. The little X-box always frustrated me.

No, not back in town. But I always come to the Phoenix board because it's the most interesting. If I were back in town, you would have heard from me by now, you sexy woman with the hottest kisses!

out there real soon and contacting you much sooner!

I was trying to save ink. And I figured when I said paste the address into your browser, people would figure out that they were going to a site where the image resided.

But it IS nice to know how to view it, isn't it.
