If it's the touristy stuff, check out the Liberty Bell (it's broken, btw lol) and right across the street is Independence Hall. The Constitution Center is pretty cool, fairly new and steps away from those other two attractions. Also check out Elfreth's Alley, Christ Church and the Betsy Ross House. Philly has an amazing zoo, and right across the river, in Camden NJ, is a fantastic aquarium.
Dining wise, the Rittenhouse Square area is a gem with many excellent, hip choices with al fresco dining (the Paris inspired "Parc" is my fave) but since it's tourist friendly, you don't have to be decked out, attire wise. You are also just steps away from neat, small bars with live entertainment strewn all over that area. If beautiful and dazzling decor, with crazy good steaks and seafood is your desire, then you must grab a table at Del Friscos. Yes, it's a chain, but you will never feel like it as it is inside an old, incredibly ornate bank building with an insanely high, breath taking, gorgeous ceiling.
If a cheesesteak sandwich is on you must to do list, I would advise you head down to the corner of 9th St and Passyunk Ave where two rival places (Pats and Ginos) are directly across the street from each other. People will argue there are better choices in town ( I would be one of them lol) but locals go there in droves and it is a totally Philly experience. Also, check out the Reading Terminal Market, where there are dozens and dozens of vendors all selling delectable sandwiches and other amazing foods. I would recommend the pork sandwich at Di Nics, but you cant go wrong anywhere there.
The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is a real beautiful part of the city with cool restaurants, bars, large water fountains, and great views. At one end is our incredible City Hall and the other is our art museum, made famous with the "Rocky Steps" out front but the inside experience is well worth a visit.
All of this is just a stones throw from virtually any Center City (aka our "downtown") hotel. Enjoy!
