I've been to both Morimto & Genji & imho (along with my friends from Japan) Genji wins hands down for authenticity, freshness & service.

Morimoto's ambience is a bit more sophisticated but, if you are a real sushi enthusiast, go for Genji. The chefs are not only skilled but offer friendly banter as well.

Genji's name has recently changed (starts with a "K") due to change in ownership but the food is still top notch as they retained the staff.

Besides what was already mentioned: Not downtown but a short cab ride away at Penn's campus is Pod. And there's Raw which is nice.

Kisso.  4th & Race.  Its BYOB.

as mentioned for Iron Cheff excitement - go to Morimoto's... the food there is a fusion sort of style and the lighting in the place is fun.

however, for an authentic feel - Genji is about as authentic as it gets.  They also have an extensive Japaneese menu if you are not into raw fish....  just a few blocks away is Fuji Mountain

I must admit, Genji is my fave but Fuji is a close second.

As was mentioned POD on the U Penn campus is also good, but that is a total "sushi as an after thought" kinda place.

I've been a regular at Genji ever since they were in the U of PA (my alma mater)area.
I'm sure we must have crossed paths there sometime.

I'm trying to date the hostess there. Just gotta work up the nerve. She's a cutie & sports fan to boot!
