I've been to both Morimto & Genji & imho (along with my friends from Japan) Genji wins hands down for authenticity, freshness & service.
Morimoto's ambience is a bit more sophisticated but, if you are a real sushi enthusiast, go for Genji. The chefs are not only skilled but offer friendly banter as well.
Genji's name has recently changed (starts with a "K") due to change in ownership but the food is still top notch as they retained the staff.
as mentioned for Iron Cheff excitement - go to Morimoto's... the food there is a fusion sort of style and the lighting in the place is fun.
however, for an authentic feel - Genji is about as authentic as it gets. They also have an extensive Japaneese menu if you are not into raw fish.... just a few blocks away is Fuji Mountain 2030 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19103 Tel: 215.751.0939, Fax: 215.751.0952
I must admit, Genji is my fave but Fuji is a close second.
As was mentioned POD on the U Penn campus is also good, but that is a total "sushi as an after thought" kinda place.
Another place in the burbs is ShangriLa - on 202 120 Swedesford Rd Devon, PA 19333 (610) 687-8838 Their "pink lady" roll is just incredible PLUS Saturday nights are transvestite night.... go out and see tha show! lol!
