While I don't think of myself as a newbie, I do have a question.  Many of the ladies request that the hobbiest be "well groomed".  Are they meaning that they want the client shaved bare or what exactly.  That would raise a lot of questions at my house.

Beyond that, have clean neat clothes (no sneaker!), hair that is not too unkempt and in general, don't look like a schlub.

Now, as to the benefits of grooming between the legs, that is a good idea too, but you do not have to shave.

Take a small cuticle scissors and cut back the brush to a managable 1/4" or so.

If you are so interested there are a number of razors on the market now that cater to that region, but be careful.

Do NOT under any circumstance use the sideburn trimmer on an electric razor for trimming down there.  That's an ouchie.

I use my beard trimmer (w/ adjustable length comb) down there, works fine.  However, I don't go as short as 1/4".

I am a newbie, and BJ's aren't too big a deal to me so far, so I'm not speaking to the ladies' opinions--I'm only speaking to the use of a trimmer for that purpose.
