Could not get an answer on regional board, so trying here. Can anyone explain why hepatitis testing is not included in the standard STD screening package offered by, among others, Planned Parenthood? Should a hobbyist who plans to diligently get screened periodically go to the extra trouble and expense of getting tested for hepatitis? Thanks for any info, W
Hepatitis B and C are transmitted mainly through blood and body fluids, yes, there is a panel called "hepatitis panel" that you can request but also keep in mind that there is a vaccine available against hepatitis B. Hepatitis C is mainly contracted through the use of syringes and through blood transfusions. I think if a person feels "he or she is at risk" it may be worth the expense of the testing, the CDC has established clear guidelines pertaining to those who should get tested.
for hobbyists and provider both, IMHO. An ounce of prevention, you know? No need to test if vaccinated.
Hep C has no vaccine and the predominant cause is via shared needles associated with IV drug use or via needlestick among healthcare workers. Sexual transmission is pretty much considered low potential. But... wherever there can be blood to blood contact transmission is possible. CDC does not currently recommend Hep C testing among sexually active people in general, unless it is known or suspected that a partner has Hep C or and/or if symptoms are present. If you're truly worried or think you are at risk, test. Just my 0.02.
Thanks. Come to think of it, I was vaccinated for a ton of stuff for some foreign travel several years ago. Bet a lot of us were. Need to dig out the records.
The Hep B shots are a series over a few months. Not a single shot. Just about every Healthcare worker and emergency responder gets them as a matter of course these days.
The vaccine should be effective for about ten years. There is no need to get a refresher if you have had the series of shots in that window. However, if you want to make sure the vaccine was effective you want to ask for a titer. I had the vaccine while working in health care, and did a titer before heading to China...
