Herpes ( HSV ) 1,2   ( If you never tested for HSV be prepared that you may find out you have herpes ) ohh no !!!  

 
I would recommend you test at least 3 times a year . If you are more sexually active  
every 3 months or 4 times a year may not be a bad idea. Hobby is great but safety is #1

I usually get tested every 4 months . ( luckily always negative :)  

You can get tested at your local community health clinic ( they are usually the cheapest )
I pay 40 $ but testing is limited to HIV , Chlamydia ,Gonorrhea. Syphilis.

If you can afford $ 220-350  then you can use online service such as STD CHECK.com or STDtestexpress.com and they offer a full panel . I usually do that once a year cause I get full blood work on top

Here in the Netherlands the officials recommend visitors of prostitutes to get tested once a year. I typically get tested every 6 to 9 months, because I see many different girls (between 100 and 150 a year) and don't have a 100% safety record.

In general I would think that the average "hobbyist" over here sees more different girls than the average " hobbyist" in the US (just because of price and availability... since it is legal and all), so I would expect similar recommendations in the US. You can't rule out HIV for the first 3 months anyway...
