Re:Some feedback about Trac Fone

I've had a TracFone for almost a year now and fortunately for me I can say that I have enjoyed a little more success with mine. One minor problem while getting the account set up was quickly and easily cured by Tech. support; seems it was a common issue for many.

The phone itself is of lesser quality, but then it is a $20 phone, what can one expect. I've experienced reasonable service area and signal reception while in major metro areas; although the call quality is less than stellar, a little static could be anticipated from a very inexpensive phone.

For what I use it for, this phone works out rather well for me, at least it's been pretty reliable so far.
...seems like she might be a YMMV phone

First, let me say thank you to all who have posted info and advice for the newbies like me who are learning about the hobby.

Based on advice from various posts, I purchased a Trac Fone (TF).  I want to share my experiences with those who may be considering a similar purchase.  Know what you are getting into

1) TF is running specials, they are offering phones for under $20. The problem with this is they are flying off the shelves.  I had to visit 5 stores before I found one in stock. (I am in SE Michigan)  Of course, you can order one from their website if you do not mind the credit card record or pay more for a more expensive model.

2) Calls to TF customer service 800 number is an adventure, to say the least
- I have talked to several CS reps today and I would assume that English was not the first language for any of them
- Call quality is very poor.  Lot's of noise on the line, lot's of noise in the background, the sound cuts out and you have to repeat yourself or ask them to repeat what they said
- After waiting for up to 15 minutes (high call volume due to the low prices), my calls have been dropped twice today, which means I had to start over again
- Each TF has a 15 digit serial number.  You will be asked to key it in every time you call, and when you finally get to a human you will be asked to give them the same number again

3) The information posted on TF website is not always complete or accurate.  For example, the procedure for activating voice mail does not acutally work, which means you end up calling customer service (see above)

4)  After calling in 6 different times today, geting 6 different "fixes", my voice mail feature still does not work.  Now I am told to wait 72 "business hours" for the phone to fully activate.  I can't wait to see how this will turn out

So anyway, take this advice for what it is worth.  The phone itself does work, I can place and receive calls, the test call quality was fine, but just be prepared for an adventure

The things that we men will do (and endure) in pursuit of pussy!!

I have had a Trac phone for a long time and have had no problems The only time I use that 15 digit # is when I set it up and when I add minutes. The only b*tch I have is the minutes are real expensive compared to my other cell plan and they don’t tell you up front that if you use it outside you zip code it charges you for twice the minutes used. I use txt messages about 90% of the time and it only charges .03 minutes per call.

Not so fast my friend.  There are other pre-paid plans on the market.  Might have been wise to buy a little better quality phone.

Really have no issues with the phone..but I do wish I would have done some more research... I really think the best plan out there is T-mobile pay as you go!...phones are a little more... about 80 bucks for the phone but you can buy 1000 minutes for a $100 seems to me the better deal!

I purchased a singular pay as you go phone today and it seems to work well.

I have to report that Trac Fone did finally get the voice mail feature to work today Jan 13 and they replaced the minutes I had used up trying to get it to work earlier this week.  So the process was a bit frustrating, but everything is working now.

I will have to see how it goes from here.  Apreciate the feedback/responses that were posted.  Worst case, this "learning experience" will only cost me about $45, and now I know about some other phone options.
