Work information is only used to verify that you are who you say you are. If that information is sensitive, I believe they will work with you to get you verified with other information.
Asking a lady to travel may depend on the distance. If it requires air travel, keep in mind that you will be the one paying the freight for her ticket, and probably additional fees for her time, expenses, etc. This might be better served by checking out the touring ladies who are coming to your area.

1. Since I'm still looking for my first hobbyist experience and therefore have no references, what is the best verification service? I checked out RoomService2000 but I know there are others out there.
2. When I looked over the application for RS2K, some of the questions involve work information (incuding telephone numbers). I don't mind giving that information, but I certainly don't want somebody calling my workplace to ask about me! How is the work information used?
3. Finally (and this might only apply after I get some references under my belt), is it better to go to a provider's city, or ask her to travel?
1) DateCheck and Preferred411 are other popular verification sites. Where you live should guide which one you choose. They're are pockets around the country where one of the three is used much more than the others.
2) they'll call your work to verify you work there. Call usually goes to the switchboard and is discrete. They'll ask if John Smith is there and then hang up while the call is going through.
3) Ask her to travel. Much less likely you'll have a last minute cancellation if she has flown to your city.

In general, they will only call your work to verify that you do, in fact, work there. They will probably ask for you and as the call is being transferred, hang up. They are not going to ask about you, knowing that you actually work there tells them that you are legit, and not LE.
As far as travelling goes, if you ask her to travel, you will be responsible for her expenses. IMHO, you would be better off finding a provider close to you which would not require either of you to travel to another town. Since I don't know where you are located, it's hard to say for sure. If there are no providers close to you, say within an hour's drive, it would be better for you to go to her, if you can get away for the necessary time.
Many providers do tour to various cities, which would eliminate the need for you to pay her expenses. It's already taken care of by her.
A beginner can get hobbying experience a few ways. The easiest is to use agencies that staff reviewed providers. All agencies screen, some more than others. Expect to give some personal, verifiable information. Use reviews to select agencies near you, the best have providers on staff that have good reviews. A second method is to find a provider that has her own verification process. Expect to provide personal information and get called at work. Expect to produce identification on the meeting day.
When you are ready to meet. You are better off locating an agency near you that meets the criteria above and driving to meet her. Many agencies provide incall appointments where the agency books the meeting place, all you do is show up on time. Having a lady travel to you can be expensive, but if you choose that route, it can also be more enjoyable.
If she comnes to you, you pay all her expenses until she gets home... that's got to cost more. If you go to her, you are paying for the travel... usually on a business trip or vacation. Most of my play is at arms length from my home... not local, but within an hour or slightly more commuting time. This way I do not have to worry about being spotted somewhere I can not explain being. Yes, I know there are very local providers but I can not safely visit their location. I have seen mostly independant ladies who do their own screening. I take pains to have all my needs, gas, snacks, bought locally. (Do not use a credit card anywhere outside your normal travels.) skb
