Although it's hard to imagine in this era; there are still many people who do not possess a cell phone. More and more providers I speak to are simply refusing to book sessions with such hobbyist. The veteran hobbyists among us both familiar and comfortable with cell phones can readily see the reasoning behind this trend. Those who don't will simply have to learn why after they acquiesce.

Get a "pay as you go" pre-paid cell phone.  Inexpensive and no paper trail, invoice, monthly statement, etc. if you topup with cash cards.

My cellphone is with a big carrier that has excellent signal quality across the USA and possibly the World. I choose this carrier after trying several large pre-paid carriers. The prepaid quality was bad, I did not get calls in remote areas like recreational areas and in large cities with tall buildings. Does the quality problem with prepaids still exist? If not then they are the best choice because of no paper trail and anyone wanting to investigate your phone records will have a hell of a time doing so. My estimate is that the quality of prepaids is no better now, I often have ladies have to use my room or cellphone to call others because of no signal from their cells.

I use prepaid Cingular phones for work, and have account based Cingular phones also.  The service is exactly the same, in fact uses the same equipment.  

Some of the resellers though might be worse though simply because they are reselling a cell company's service.

nearly every major cellular company now provides a prepaid option.  And even some of those that are prepaid only, now provide excellent and consitent service.  I've used my Virgin phone for a couple of years now to play in many locations, and have not had any problems.

A lot of the prepaid phones only work on their parrent network.  ie the  Virgin Wireless uses sprint, and won't roam like a true sprint phone.  
Their coverage is limited to interstates and major cities.
