The benefits of doing so more than justify what I perceive as a minimal cost!  The search features and full reviews are more than enough to help you ease into this hobby.

More specifically, the broader search functions should help you find those providers who are willing to see guys without any references (they're out there!).  Be prepared, however, to be able to corroborate you being safe by providing some personal information you might not be all that inclined to share.  As with many things in life, you'll be faced with a cost/benefit/risk analysis.  I would suggest trying to hook up early with a couple of providers who have a bunch of reviews (more reason to get the VIP) so that if you do get a reference from them, it may carry more weight or one may by sufficient.  Have fun, be smart!

check out the 3 verification sites, DateCheck, Preferred411, and Roomservice2000.  RS2K is most popular in the midwest, but is nationwide as the others are.  In addition, P411 allows providers to indicate on their profiles if they are newbie friendly.  It also has a toll free number you can call.  Gina, the owner will do her best to work with you on getting you verified on the site.
