ARRRRGGGGG!       Following a recommendation, I have invited Google Voice into my life.  It has proven unreliable and simply not compatible with my existing Iphone.
I would kiss you if you will guide me toward an effective private line. I hope I can chose the phone number as I did with GVoice.         What works for other providers?    XXX Giselle Gatsby

Sorry to hear about your troubles with GV.  Your only alternative is to get a burn phone for your hobby business.  They are available everywhere......

Thank you, Caitlyn.  I need to receive calls separately for my provider phone number.

I have wanted to avoid all calls coming in via my usual cell phone number.
Just to clarify, I desire having separate lines. . .  make sense?  G

create a brand new phone # and have it forwarded to any phone you want... home, cell, etc

I use google voice on my iphone and when I make a call via google voice, the GV number is what shows up on the other person's caller ID. I can also receive calls dialed to my GV number, and send and receive texts as well as receive voice mails. You must have something off in your settings.

But if it still doesn't work for you there have been recent posts here about other apps that give you a second line. One is called "burner" and one is called "line 2." you might try searching the board for those posts or just search google. But I would check the settings on your google voice and see if you can set that up correctly first because it does work well for many people.

Another option is to just get a second phone like a tracphone or something, but then you need to carry two phones (though many providers and hobbyists do just that.)

Good luck.

to your phone. Not sure what you mean by two different lines, as in that case, you would just get another phone. Two different "numbers" yes, but it will still be forwarded to your phone. If you download the gmail plug in, you can call and text right from your actual PC, Tablet, etc

You have phone service (number) on your iPhone, right?  That is number 1 (your personal number)
You have google voice number!  That is number 2 (your business/hobby number)
So you have two numbers!  Nothing needs to be ported unless you want to replace one with the other.  On mine, both numbers ring to the same phone and it shows which number is recieving the call.  When I make an outgoing call, I set it up to prompt "call with google voice" or "call without google voice" and I select which number to use.  Works beautifully for me.

I think what she means is, using the app on an iPhone, when the phone rings you just see a number and no notification of which line is receiving the call until it is answered.

To display YOUR google voice # as the caller ID for incomming calls to that number.  Doesn't help with knowing who is calling, but at least you know which number is being called and can answer appropriately.  Only work around that I know of at this point.  Apparently that is something that they are working on enhancing.  Just go to SETTINGS > CALLS > CALLER ID (incomming)
