You can always try to get an appointment with an independent without references. If you are of a certain age, can provide verifiable employment information, and approach the provider in just the right way, she might waive her requirement of references. But most won't. OTOH, usually most agencies are fine if they can confirm your employment. It's definitely the path of least resistance for someone new to the hobby.

Agency girls have reviews too! If you are going to go with an agency girl find reviews on her. Otherwise you are taking many of the same risks that you would with an non-reviewed indie girl.

For a new hobbyist, I would say use an agency. As an independant our screening processes may make you very uncomfortable.

Just like you are a newbie, most agency girls are NEWBIES TOO. So you kind of grow with them. Once you get to know an agency girl, she may want you to remain her client when and if she leaves the agency. You may also recieve special rates and treatment for sticking with her through the transition. You will be considered a true "regular".
