I'm new to the hobby and was hoping to find someone to play with but it looks like my only option is myself until I can get verified. Is there a particular service that is universally accepted or do I need to get verified by multiple sources?  Also, how long does the process take?

It just depends on the provider.  They all have different screening practices.  The most common verification services are P411, Date Check, and RS2000.

Many providers will list these on their site if they use them.  Others will indicate if they are newb friendly.

Start with RS2k (room service 2000) best place to start first. They take 24-48 hours to approve you. They have great customer service and they are the bet because its thorough and simple.After you do that and meet a provider ask nicely for a vouch for you to get on p411 or to Whitelist you on TER (don't ask right after the appointment email or call her as a follow up)  (P411 takes 24-48 hours to get approval) Date check is really hard you need to have a solid rep and have girls vouch for you, have a solid message board presence etc. Some girls will take a combination of LinkedIn Profiles, copy of your I'd (with key info blanked out), work info. Not a Facebook account or a google voice account(the girls safety is important so of course it's worth the time and money to get verified so that Everyone is comfortable)

If you worried about a paper trail many of the verification sites slow you to pay discretely.
