A Provider can offer to provide a reference for your future meetings. (She gives you a reference.)
When you call to make an appointment with someone new, she wants your references, so you "give her your references" as in you "give her the NAMES and CONTACT INFO of the Providers willing to give you a reference."
(Once you do have references, check with them BEFORE handing out their info to someone else to make sure that will vouch for you. Some need a reminder of who you are for when they are contacted. They might not remember your name, but you can jog their memory with something from the session ("I'm the guy with the Spiderman underwear.") BEFORE they are contacted.)
The Provider is a reference. Her "letter of introduction" is a reference. (No one writes a letter of introduction - I'm just trying to give it a physical meaning.) Her name is the reference you give to a potential hostess. Etc.
But, yeah, it's the old Catch-22. "How do I give [the names of my] references if I don't have any?"
Be patient, start slow, follow Debs' advice. READ your local board for a while before chiming in to ask for advice there
