Unfortunately, things are more unsafe these days in NYC.
Yes, the subway and public transportation have gotten worse.
So has the city streets.
Tourists have gotten shot in Times Square in the middle of the afternoon just walking around these past few weeks.
Uber and Lyft drivers have died getting hit by drivers who run through red lights or by carjackings.
Washington Square Park near New York University has gotten out of control even with increased police presence.
I still take the subways as it is the fastest way to get around for me.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to not be distracted from observing and hearing your surroundings. I usually do not take out my phone to read, watch videos, or listen to audio. I try to keep away from the doors since there's a chance of getting items snatched or punched when they close. I avoid sitting down in crowded subway cars so no one can stand over me in a superior position.
Also, on hot summer days, if a subway car is empty between two crowded ones, that means either the air conditioner is broken, or there is a dirty, smelly, unstable person occupying that car.
If you're walking, pepper spray is legal in NYC. Keep it near or in your hand (not purse).
