As someone who has lived most of his life and is aware of the current conditions here in NY, I thought I might make a few suggestions to providers thinking of visiting.  Also, I hope to give you a better understanding of what to expect when you visit.  Let me tell you what New York is really about.

--Expect to pay double what your hotel room is worth.  And expect it to be twice as small as you hoped it to be.  A decent room 10x10 about $350.

--Do not make eye contact with anyone.  Here in NY it seems to be taken as an invite for an argument.

--If you must use the subway, don't expect it to work properly any time except 6-10AM and 4-10PM.  The mass transit system's purpose it to get the working folks to and from work thus easing traffic a little so the Limos and Towncars can get the real important people where they need to go.  Do not mistake the transit systems as something being offered for public convenience.  There aren't even any public restrooms available.  Actually I've seen 2, yes TWO.  With hundreds of miles of track and hundreds of stations and hundreds of thousands of riders daily, 2 restrooms.  But New Yorkers don't seem to mind.  Many urinate right in the stations, by the stairs is a favorite, or by the trash pail.

--Don't bother police officers with questions about directions or any other info.  Especially those of you from other countries, the police are not public servants here.  They serve as a security force for the elite.  They are here to make sure nobody messes with big business.  They are not trained to protect and prevent crime, but to detain those deemed undesirable and collect funds for the city via tickets and fines.  Hey the tax breaks to Disney Time SQuare and new stadiums have to be made up somewhere.  Besides they are very busy nowadays with arresting escorts, football betting sheet offices and now MR. Softy the Ice Cream truck for excessive noise.  I am not kidding, MR. Softy.

--Understand what the "quality of life" crimes are really about.  It's not about quality of life for the citizens of NY but the quantity of business interests.  Example: my favorite coffee and bagel cart (which was operating for years at the same location) was chased away from the block as part of a "quality of life" crime as it obstructed the sidewalk.  Laughable as this was actually one of the most spacious walkways I've used in Manhattan.  Anyway, in less than a month a Starbucks was set up with a huge stand extending to and blocking part of the sidewalk.

--Even though this city is somehow associated with debauchery and vice, you wont find it unless you really know where to look and someone to get you in.  Our strip clubs are as tame as can be, our adult video stores are forced to stock 60% non adult material.  Just try to light a cigarette, I dare ya.

--Understand those in power can do Whatever they want here.  If it's too blatant, they will even change the laws if they have to.  Example:  You have an adult video store near times square for years.  Suddenly, mega corporations are interested in times square.  They want you to vacate, but you have a lease.  Hey, well here's a solution: you can no longer sell those videos, it's a quality of life issue.  You know you cant stay in business.  You're gone.  If New York wants porn let them order it through the cable companies.  No porn without one of the approved major corporations getting a cut.

--You have only the rights they say you have.  Understand this girls?  I once naively thought that to be arrested for a crime you had to actually commit one.  Not so.  I know a girl personally who is a college student and thought she might pay her way working.  She went for the job interview and a minute after she sat down the cops busted in.  Because it was a Friday, she had to do the weekend in jail.  She was there and that's all they cared about.  She never even saw a client. I've heard many other accounts similar to this one.

--Stay inline.  Nothing they hate more than disobedience.  School teachers and other dangerous types were detained for days in a filthy grease filled bus servicing station when they protested the Iqaq war.  People were getting sick from sleeping on the oil saturated floors.  They were kept there and not a damn thing anyone can do about it.

--Remember you are at their mercy.  You can screen till you're blue in the face, but if they want you they can get you.  Only take clients that you can verify by calling the company switchboard?  They set that up too.  Drivers license?  Sure they can issue those.  Home phone?  Sure they can arrange that as well.  Hey "Well he touched my breasts and I licked his dick" you say.  Well says who?  Or should I say, says ho'.  You word against theirs.

--And one last thing, Watch where you step.  There is dog shit everywhere.  Should be no surpise as we just love animals here.  The upper east side is home to the most advanced animal hospital in the country.  True story: I once saw a homeless man and his cat by a subway station.  Later that evening I saw him crying.  I asked what happened and he told me they took his cat.  The ASPCA or one of those animal rights groups came and rescued the cat.  They left the human being in a cardboard box, but they rescued the cat.  In NY you can pay an easy million for an apartment but have to dodge huge steaming piles of dog shit as you walk outside.  These people are never home but they hire dog walkers.  What a sight, a 120 pound guy being dragged around the block by a pack of dogs shitting all over the place, by the mailboxes, the newspaper vending machines, in front of your house.  People have to walk with their head down and watch every step.  I bet you have to go to Calcutta to find similar unsanitary conditions.  But hey vendor near the curb is gone.   Disgusting.

Yeah I know what this sounds like.

I think he was trying to make light of what's been going on in Manhattan lately with the quality of life laws and thought he was funny however Manhattan is notorious for being cut-throat with no shows.

Remember Chuck Knoblach?

He couldn't reach 1st base from the second base postition!

Perhaps this Chuck suffers from the same dilemma?

Anyway, anyone who knows anything about the Big Apple knows that it is one of the most delicious pieces of fruit in the bowl of top cities.

Don't pay attention to this sorry fellow's sour grapes!

It's not that bad at all...

NY is still fun city...but like any big city, don't be foolish
and not be streetwise. Pick out who you stare at wisely in the subway...lol...why just the other day on the #5 express...
this gorgeous blonde gets on at 59th. We make eye contact inmmediately. She smile and winks....try to make my way over and in a flash...she's out the door MIA at 42nd.Oh...the possibilities?

better deals on hotels can be had....the subway at $2 bucks is still the best deal around...NY'ers(even NYPD) when asked politely will assist you with concerns and directions.
As for the dog shit, haven't seen any in my travels lately.

Maybe you'll step in some and get lucky.

Cheers!

Especially the part about the dog shit (still laughing).   I used to walk around everywhere with my head up, taking in all the scenes around me.  But since I've started coming here regularly for the past few years, I have developed the habit of looking down everywhere I go.  You know why?  Piles of dog crap on the sidewalks!  and Something that never fails to incite giggles is when I see "smudges" of it, where someone obviously stepped in a pile and tried (in vain) to scrape it off the bottom of his/her shoe, lol.

Oh, and I'll *never* forget the time I was picked up from the airport by a dear one, in the middle of summer, and after finding a parking spot on the UES, I get out of the vehicle to find one of those huge, fresh, steaming, glazed piles that only an elephant could have unleashed, right behind the tire.  How we managed to miss running over it, I'm unsure.  Even if I'd had hands the size of Shaq's...armed with ten rubber gloves...I still don't think I'd have wanted to pick that one up either.  Am I just sick that I find it hilarious, though?

Anyway...

NYC is *still* the best city in the world.  Even in subzero temps., its still my preferred playground.  Even the little doggy piles are frozen then.

Yeah, right.  Been to Paris lately? Or had to dodge the phlegm gobbets littering the pavements of Hong Kong? At least dog poo is only moderately slippery and you can see it easily.

And there are heaps of hotels in NYC that will give you a decent room for USD350, unlike London where you can expect to pay USD425 for the room and pray you can find a decent meal for under a hundred quid.

And your police may not be particularly helpful, but they are there to protect and serve, not guide and inform. At least they don't shake you down for bribes.

Your subway is fine, no better or worse than most first world mass transit systems.  Yes, Tokyo is cleaner and almost always runs on time, but you've got to share the carriages with hoardes of horny salarymen who read hardcore S&M comics inches from your nose while refining their frottage technique.  Though I guess this is better than Rome, where gangs of children as young as 6 will skillfully remove your wallet and make off with your laptop before you even leave the platform.

Truly, I think you need to travel more, broaden your horizons and count your blessings.

Paris has had a pooper scooper law for several years.  Rarely does one see "poo" on the sidewalk anymore.

Despite hefty fines and the little green 'doggy loos' it's still very much a very distinctive feature of the streetcape.  Fortunately it's such a gorgeous city that it's worth tolerating.

I did not post this to insult anyone.  And I certainly don't want the girls to stop coming.  As far as broadening my horizons Emma, I've been to many cities world wide and I started to notice these problems more and more as I returned from other cities.  I do agree Paris is notorious for dog poo but there's not any more of it there than here.  As for the hotel prices, I've stayed in identical rooms in Montreal for half the price.  Boston and San Fran I found to be remarkably cleaner and safer and much more fun.  I've never had a problem in Rome, been there months at a time.  If there are kids running around stealing, well in NY the kids wont steal from you until after they shoot you dead.   Switzerland is very nice also.
Kachinalucca, I was trying to show how absurd these quality of life laws are.  Thanks for noticing. True NY is notorious for no shows, I however can proudly say I never no showed.

Mike, I remember knoblach.  One of the most entertaining 2nd basemen I've ever seen.  Ya just never knew where he would throw it.

Kacey Cummings, thanks for finding the humor and pointing out that I am not crazy and there really is too much dog poo.

Emma, Did you ever ride the subways in Boston or Montreal?  2x more quiet,  2x cleaner.  And as for the police here to "protect and serve" that's a big joke.  My complaint is not that I want them to be tourist guides but I would like them to protect us from violent crime instead of acting like a gang.  My cop friends often say they are "The Biggest Gang in NYC".  Let's hope they never get you on a Friday, cause then you're looking at an entire weekend.  I do appreciate your opinion Emma, but as a visitor you see things differently.  I have 30 years experience living here and I think I know a little more about this city than you do.  I'm sure you know much more than I do about your hometown.

This city should be the greatest in the world considering it's people and history.  It's not.  Proivders I may have been wrong.  I should have said it's an awful place to live, I guess visiting is fine.

Booster, I pack a modest 5", squirt maybe a tablespoon and can only go 3 times in 2 hours, well maybe 3 hours.
