I'm going to be in New York the week after Thanksgiving, (for the day job) and I'm wondering what events you might suggest.  If you had only one evening to go out and have limited funds what is the shouldn't miss event.

Wbatever you decide, try getting your tickets at the TKTS booth the same day your want to go.  They are usually 50% off the face price.  Go the location downtown for no lines.

"West Side Story" is outstanding but pricey

"39 steps" is reasonable and lots of fun

TKTS is great or join Playbill.com it's free registration and all the shows with discounts are there.

You should like these musicals but check them out for your tastes. Billy Elliott or Bloody, Bloody Andrwe Jackson or Next to Normal -- all have very different stories with great nmusic.  The bi-polarism of Next to Normal makes some people sad though.

Time Stands Still and brief Encounters are dramas that are well written and with supurb performances.

Thanksgiving is a busy week but you'll find discounts and you'll love whatever you see in the live threatre.....

I'm generally not a big fan of musicals, but Fela is pretty amazing.

Regarding Suzy--if you haven't spent time with Suzy, do yourself a favor.  VERY nice lady. . .

broadway.box is good suggestion- most of the shows that have been around awhile you can get discounts tix for Phantom, Chicago etc- especially if you are going on a week night-  La Cauge is good with Kelsey Grammar, Merchant of Venice with Pacino is supposed to be good- but tix tough to get- Time Stand Still mentioned above is good drama- if you like musicals Billy Elliot is popular along with Mamma Mia-

Since it's the Christmas season, I would skip a show or the "usual" New York events, and instead do something like the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas Tree and skating rink, followed by the holiday window displays at stores like Saks Fifth Avenue (across the street from Rockefeller Plaza), Lord & Taylor (38th and Fifth Avenue) and Bergdorf Goodman (between 57th and 58th Street and Fifth Ave. on the West side of the street). You don't really get this in most other cities any more, and it's a great way to get into the holiday spirit, if you don't mind the crowds. There's also a great Christmas market in Bryant Park, behind the research library on 42nd and Fifth, as well as another skating rink and smaller, but still very pretty, Christmas tree.
