One place I love for late night munchies- Le Express on the eastside off Park Ave. I think they are 24 hours and quite delish when you want to go somewhere after hours.

1) Le Rivage: Very charming place in the theater district. It has a very warm, cozy vibe--like a countryside inn. The people who run this place are incredibly nice and welcoming. (Been coming here for years prior to taking in a Broadway show--they always remember me.) Web link: http://www.lerivagenyc.com

2) La Grenouille: It's VERY expensive--but it's worth every nickel. The atmosphere here is second to none--fresh flowers in the dining room every day--wonderful!! (I believe a jacket is still required for men--this is an elegant place.) The food is just fabulous!! If I wanted to really wanted to impress a femme-fatale this would be the spot I'd take her. Peter Luger's in Brooklyn. Definitely not on the elegant side of fine dining, more business casual, but so good.

You have an interesting notion of French cuisine.

I love french!those are my personal favorite

Balthazar: med-high price range, need reservation or will be lonnnggg wait.
La Sirene: very reasonable price, tiny family restaurant. Used to able to bring your own bottle but I think it changed now since they sell wine.
Brasserie 81/2: love the presentation of restaurant n food.

A lot non-Michelin little local french restaurant are good in NYC too, I'd recommend to give it a try!;)

Please do post suggestions for restaurants, and maybe some unique NYC things to check out that aren't on most tourist lists.

At Mamoun's on MacDougal Street next door to Cafe Reggio, down the block from Ben's Pizza and also on the same block as the Comedy Cellar.  All great locations to hang out.  Mamouns is a tiny hole in the wall with extremely cheap but good food. Dont expect to eat in as there are only 2 tiny lil tables, instead, do it for lunch and then eat it 2 blocks away in Washington Square Park.
