I've been away from this scene for a while and this was a common problem when I was around before.  

I'd like to see if it's still the same while deciding whether to become involved again.

I'm not sure whether you mean that too much 'white-knighting' was a problem before or whether the lack thereof was the problem. Regardless, like the poster above mentioned, whatever your preference, you can find your own niche within the forum.
