According to http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm, an item purchased in 1913 for $1 would cost $22.03 in 2010. The booklet was $1 in 1870, so maybe call it $40 in 2010 dollars, tops.

Another calculator here http://www.measuringworth.com/uscompare/ gives a range of values from $16 to more than $200. $1 in 1870 has Purchasing Power of $17 in 2009.
