Suzanne, I can't say that I've ever done the cross country trip by car and not sure that I'll ever get the chance, but OMG, If you're going to do it, you're going to have such an adventure.
I'm certainly no expert on the route to take, but certain places you have to hit along the way to the other coast....
You gotta hit the South Western states and adjacent states like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Nevada, before you make it to California and you finish your journey as you drive west on Sunset, turning that jungle music down, just until your out of town.... Ha! Bonus points for anyone that can tell me what song lyric, from what band, I just paraphrased???
But I digress... The South West offers some of the most beautiful and diverse scenic vistas you can ever experience. Enjoy!
The quick answer is that I have done it in four days. It is about 2800 miles and it is not hard to average 700 miles per day on modern interstates.
The most direct route is to leave NYC through the Lincoln Tunnel and take NJ Turnpike to I-78 across southern PA. You pick up I-70 in Western PA and follow it into St Louis, MO. There you pick up I-44 and diagonal SW through MO and OK to Oklahoma City where you take I-40 West. You stay on I-40 through OK, TX, NM, and AZ into CA where it will merge with I-15 into Los Angeles.
Watch out for LE but not for the usual hobby reasons.
Northernmost....stay 80 to 76 then 70...have to hit Colorado and Utah most deff...easy driving and absolutely stunning. Yes approx 4 days...can be done sooner if you drive straight thru but no point in that unless youre on a mission. Too much to see and do....watch out and stay away from the roadside hotels (scary) pay more and stick to the bigger chains like Hilton. Plan your stops and research beforehand or it can ruin what seemingly could be an awesome trip. Must stops...Aspen, Breckenridge, Telluride and Sundance....worth a stop if ur an open city girl gone mtn...exquisite sites and towns and must see on anyones bucket list.

I took rt 66 Stopped at the grand canyon , Graceland , a few other stops .Tennessee was a bitch . Took 5 days . We literally drafted the trucks and were pulled part of the way I have to say I am glad I did it .I will never do it again .I also did Amtrack the other direction it was nice . Miss K
It took 2 1/2 days. I remember getting up in Amarillo the second morning and driving all the way to Indianapolis late the same day. About a month later, the engine blew. So slow down and enjoy the ride.
as to me make this trip on car .. is ,, just .. gone .. hmm nuts.. FLY take Amtrak yes .. as to make business .. on the way ?? common there are parts on this road where men say - all what is good for horse is good for me .. ha ha want meet them .. ?? then go .. ha ha East coats and West coast FLY ..in between .. American jungles .. but again I am talking from European perspective .. you ma enjoy the trip and people ..

Did the cross country several times. I would suggest I-78 to the Reading PA area 222 south to the PA Tpk PA turnpike to I-70. Take I-70 to the corner of Utah and take I-15 South to Barstow and Take I-10 from Ontario to LA
You will see some beautiful country along the way Kansas is all cornfields nothing to look at. Take advantage of your cruise control as well.

Drove it once.... Santa Cruz to Boston took exactly 68 hours, rotating drivers non stop.
And found the adventure to get there became a self reflecting journey. By the time I got to the west coast, I had thought about a lot in my life. I'm still out here, but thinking its time now to drive back east for a visit. I liked going through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kansas has the most amazing sky! In Missouri I was robbed, and Colorado is pretty but conservative. LA people are very positive and interesting. Anyway, It's been fun and epic. The distances are vast once you hit Colorado. East coast you can get from city to city pretty fast and there is good public transportation. West coast has such long distances between states and cities. It's an entirely different existence but worth experiencing.
Well it's over 30 years but I still believe that my buddy Cozy and myself still have the record for the fastest ever NYC to LA time. I don't think it could ever be done with more cars on the road and major congestion. I actually post a picture of the trophy once on a gfe site.
NY to LA in an hour? I have been saying for 25 years the tech is already there just hidden by the military/industrial complex. There are dozens of huge subterranean sites that are connected by high speed electro-magnetic ''trains" for lack of a the proper word. I laugh at the rock borers that are used for underground tunnels or chunnels. We have equipment that will melt solid rock and kept hidden. How long was the stealth fighter hidden? It usually take about 25 years for this tech to finally come out in small portions. it is slowly creeping out. Just imagine what new toys are kept hidden.
