If your friend is into good music then you have to check out Cafe Wha. Not exactly a tourist trap it is definitely an amazing time every time I go there. Really good classic music, not classical lol, just classic.

Check out the Slipper Room or the Box. Also, maybe Sleep No More? (An immersive rendition of MacBeth, to put it lightly). If she is a foodie: there are many, many excellent restaurants in the city, not to mention exquisite custom cocktail bars. I'd have a few more suggestions if it weren't so damn cold out!

 I have a good friend coming to New York this weekend for a few days and will be switching my heels/lingerie for snow shoes/sweaters to act as tour guide.  
   
 My friend has never been here before and I wanted to do something different than all the other usual tourist traps.  
   
 Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Best view of Manhattan bar none. See the Statue of Liberty the way the immigrants did. Plus its free.

Awesome suggestion Cosette, the Cellar has nurtured and is "home base" to some of the best comics that have come out of or are based in NYC including Louis C.K., Jim Norton, Robert Kelly, Keith Robinson and a host of others.  You'll have a good time no matter what act is on.

dozens and dozens of pubs all within walking distance or short cab ride of a few blocks.

Thai noodles at No Name Bar in Brooklyn is always a treat, it's a hole in the wall and you have to "know" how to order. Hipster fun, if you're into that from time to time.

It's got like tons of cools stuff to see.  From Egyptian mummies to arms and armor from the Middle Ages, to paintings of nekkid broads ( lol ).  Everything from Asia to Europe to Africa and the Americas, kinda a whole day of just chilling and looking at cool shit.

Yep, when they used to still allow 18 and over, as opposed to just 21 and over, I was there at least once a week through my college years. I saw both Louis CK and Jim Norton, it was 2001-2002...saw Chris Rock and Ray Romano as special surprise guests and just recently Aziz Ansari.

Then walk two blocks to see a live band at Arline's Grocery.  
Get hammered there. They used to hook me up with lots of buy backs.
Then, another two blocks to the Slipper Room.
In general. That is a really good area to see what the real NYC is about.

The weather will be warm enough this weekend for you to check out the High Line on the west side.  After you've worked up an appetite, stop in at Chelsea Market.

I have to agree that it's a fun and free way to see the harbor and the Statue of Liberty.  The Statue is overrated to actually go to Liberty Island and climb inside it.  All it is, is a bunch of staircases and an OK view with a long ass wait, etc.  whereas the Ferry only costs you the time to go there and back (don't bother staying in Staten Island, there's not much to see there.)
